Pálinka
Hungary's national spirit, pálinka, is something we can truly be proud of! It stands up well against major international categories in several ways. Firstly, in terms of tradition, Hungary has a rich history with fruit brandy, as the first domestic fruit distillate was known at the court of King Charles Robert in the 14th century—earlier than the first whisky, cognac, gin, rum, or tequila. Secondly, pálinka is made from the noblest raw material, fresh, juicy, flavorful fruit—rather than grains, molasses, or agave!
It's important to know that real pálinka is produced under strict regulations, with three key points:
- It must be made in Hungary.
- It must be made from fruit grown in Hungary—no tropical fruits allowed.
- It must be made only from fruit—no added sugar, honey, or alcohol, and no added flavors. Therefore, the term "honey pálinka" is incorrect, as pálinka sweetened with honey cannot be called pálinka, only liqueur.
And please don't use the term pálinka for other spirits—remember, not every spirit is pálinka, but every pálinka is a spirit! The Zwack Kecskeméti Pálinka Manufaktúra is not only one of the most modern distilleries in Hungary but also in Europe, boasting numerous awards and accolades. The distillation process combines centuries of experience with the latest technology.
