Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region
The Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region is located in the northeastern part of Hungary, within a triangular area bordered by the Sátor Hill near Sátoraljaújhely, the Abaújszántó Sátor Hill, and the Tokaj Kopasz Hill. The vineyard area of the region is approximately 5,446 hectares, with 28 Hungarian villages (and 2 Slovakian ones) contributing to the wine production.
The region has a continental climate, with a fascinating variation in microclimates due to the proximity of the Tisza and Bodrog Rivers. The entire area is primarily characterized by volcanic soil formations, often covered by loess layers. Currently, only five grape varieties are authorized for cultivation in Tokaj-Hegyalja: Furmint, Hárslevelű, Sárga Muskotály, Zéta, and Kövérszőlő.
Tokaj-Hegyalja is exclusively a white wine-producing region. The dry wines are known for their high acidity and the mineral-spicy aromas and flavors imparted by the volcanic soil. Among the dry wines, Furmint stands out as the foundation for unique wines. The sweet wines can offer an exceptional experience, depending on their sugar, acidity, and extract content.
Late harvest sweet wines have a botrytized character that is expressed in vibrant fruitiness. The aged Aszú wines, through micro-oxidation, develop deeper aromatic and flavor profiles, often exhibiting complex sensations. High puttonyos (bucket) Aszú wines possess aging potential for several decades, making them a true treasure in the world of wine.
