South Balaton Wine Region
The South Balaton Wine Region encompasses the entire southern shoreline of Lake Balaton. With excellent geographical features and favorable climatic conditions, the area offers outstanding opportunities for viticulture. Despite its large size, the region has a consistent soil structure. The lower layers of the vineyards are composed of clayey-sandy sediments, covered by clay and loess.
As with other Balaton wine regions, the South Balaton area is primarily known for its white wines. Dominant grape varieties include Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Muscat Ottonel, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris), Tramini (Gewürztraminer), Királyleányka, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rajnai Rizling (Riesling). The wines produced here are generally rounded and well-balanced, authentically reflecting the characteristic aroma and flavor profile of the respective grape variety.
Red wines are produced in smaller quantities, while rosé production is gaining popularity among several wineries. In addition to the region’s smooth, mildly acidic wines, standout examples also come from the Kápolna Hill in Boglár and Várhegy in Fonyód, which are known for their livelier wines with more pronounced acidity.
