The 200-Year Story of Johnnie Walker
The story of Johnnie Walker began in 1820. After the death of his father, a young John Walker sold the family estate and opened a grocery store in Kilmarnock. He initially traded in tea and spices, but it quickly became clear that crafting unique flavors required expertise and skill. Over time, John applied his knowledge to the creation of blended whiskies, which were recognized for their consistent, high quality. His whiskies quickly gained a reputation, offering a refined alternative to the rougher, more inconsistent spirits that were common at the time. This expertise and commitment to quality set Johnnie Walker apart, helping it grow into the renowned whisky brand it is today.
Johnnie Walker Trademarks
The brand was already popular, but after the death of John Walker, his son, Alexander "Alec" Walker, introduced the iconic square bottle design in 1860. The square shape allowed for more bottles to fit in the same space and reduced the likelihood of bottles breaking during transport. Another key feature of the Johnnie Walker brand is the tilted label, which has been placed at a 24-degree angle since 1860. This design allowed for larger text to fit on the label, making it more visible.
Creation of New Variants
Alexander's dream was to create a premium blended whisky. In 1867, he developed the Old Highland Whisky, a blend that became a defining product among exceptional whiskies. Between 1906 and 1909, John's grandsons, George and Alexander II, expanded the product line by introducing three new whiskies: Old Highland, Special Old Highland, and Extra Special Old Highland. These all featured the iconic Johnnie label, but with different colors: white, red, and black. In 1909, a rebranding introduced the now-famous "Striding Man" logo, created by Tom Browne. During this time, the product names were also changed: Old Highland became Johnnie Walker Red Label, and Extra Special Old Highland became Johnnie Walker Black Label.
Red Label
Johnnie Walker Red Label is the world's best-selling Scotch whisky, made by blending around 35 single malt and grain whiskies, including some of Scotland's most beloved whiskies like Cardhu, Caol Ila, Cameronbridge, and Teaninich. It offers a fresh and spicy profile with vibrant apple and citrus fruitiness, complemented by hints of cinnamon and pepper, followed by a warm, smoky finish. It’s perfect for a highball at home, served in a tall glass with ice and mixed with lemonade, ginger ale, or your choice of mixer.
Black Label
Johnnie Walker Black Label is a rich, smooth Scotch whisky that combines 29 different distillery single malt and grain whiskies. After spending 12 years in oak casks, it reaches a vibrant, full-bodied flavor. The result is a harmonious blend of smoky, sweet, fruity, spicy, and vanilla notes. It’s ideal served in a long glass, as a highball with your favorite mixer, which could be lemonade, ginger ale, or peach iced tea, offering a true tasting experience. This award-winning Scotch whisky is perfect for home enjoyment and makes a fantastic gift for those who enjoy smooth, smoky whiskies.
Double Black Label
Johnnie Walker Double Black Label is a special variant of the Black Label, created with heavily peated barley and aged in casks with a uniquely toasted interior during a specific part of the maturation process. This results in a whisky that is more intense than the traditional Black Label, yet still remains light. It delivers a pleasantly smoky flavor with a rich, pikanter, and layered taste profile, perfect for those who appreciate a deeper, smokier Scotch.
Gold Label Reserve
Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve is an award-winning whisky crafted by master blender Jim Beveridge as a true masterpiece of the blending art. It features a selection of whiskies chosen for their sweet, honeyed aromas, offering vibrant and complex layers of flavor in every drop. The smoky, peaty notes take a backseat in this blend, allowing the bright, swirling flavors to shine. With its impeccable balance, Gold Label Reserve is a luxurious experience perfect for any celebratory occasion. Whether enjoyed neat or in a cocktail, this whisky makes an exceptional gift that adds a touch of gold to any moment.
Blue Label
Johnnie Walker Blue Label is a velvety smooth and vibrant Scotch whisky made from a blend of hand-selected whiskies from the four corners of Scotland, including rare gems from "ghost distilleries" that have since closed down. Only one in every ten thousand casks has the exceptional depth of character necessary to create this extraordinarily smooth whisky. To fully appreciate its complexity, it is recommended to first prepare the palate with a sip of ice-cold water, followed by a sip of the noble whisky itself. With its remarkable rarity, the Blue Label is an extraordinary gift that offers an unforgettable journey into the profound depths of flavor found in the rarest whiskies.
BLACK LABEL SHERRY FINISH
The new, limited-edition Johnnie Walker Black Label Sherry Finish builds upon the familiar flavors of Johnnie Walker Black Label, enhanced with the sweetness of figs and plums, thanks to the sherry cask finishing process.
Crafted from the same silky smooth Scotch whiskies aged for a minimum of 12 years, this expression grows into a vibrant and lively flavor profile. What makes it truly unique is the after-maturation in ex-sherry casks, which imparts soft, sweet notes to the whisky. Emma Walker, Johnnie Walker's master blender, describes it as: "This is a whisky inspired by the bold and dynamic flavors of Johnnie Walker Black Label, a profile the brand is rightly known for. We took this unmistakable character and exceptional depth of flavor, and ultimately married it with the smooth, sweet softness from ex-sherry casks."
