Mátra Wine Region
The Mátraalja wine region is situated along a section of the volcanic mountain chain that extends all the way to the Hargita mountains in Romania. The region encompasses excellent vineyard areas located in the territories of Abasár, Domoszló, Gyöngyös, Gyöngyöspata, Gyöngyöstarján, and Nagyréde. The slopes of the Mátra hills are composed of volcanic middle layers, which are covered with clay, sandstone, and limestone.
The flagship wines of the Mátraalja wine region are characterized by light, fresh, and intensely fruity aromas and flavors. Due to the warmer climate, the white wines here often have a higher alcohol content. Key grape varieties include Olaszrizling, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Muscat Ottonel, Hárslevelű, Sauvignon Blanc, Királyleányka, and Traminer.
In recent years, however, the region has demonstrated its ability to produce excellent red wines as well. Kékfrankos, Pinot Noir, and Rubintos are expected to play an important role in the production of red wines in this area.
