Gin
This category is a grain spirit, but in this case, the base alcohol is redistilled with juniper and secret ingredients. Originally, its homeland was in what is now the Netherlands, where it is revered as Jenever. It embarked on its journey to global fame from England, and today, gin is produced in every corner of the world. The Gin and Tonic culture is something anyone visiting a cocktail bar will encounter. Gin is not protected by geographical indication, so it can be produced anywhere in the world (even London Dry gin).
The main differences between gins lie in the ingredients distilled and the distillation techniques used by each brand, which are always secret and unique. For example, one of the most classic London Dry gins from the Tanqueray brand uses only juniper, coriander, angelica root, and licorice for the second distillation.
A recent success in Hungarian gin culture is Kalumba, which is crafted with exotic spices from Madagascar, such as calumba root, cubeb pepper, and citrus. This gin is produced at a world-class "Masterclass" distillery in Kecskemét.
