Dr. Loosen Estate – A Benchmark of Mosel Riesling
Dr. Loosen is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Mosel region, and its name is recognized around the world as a guarantee of quality.
The estate's success lies in several key factors: exceptionally old vines (with an average age of 70 years, some even over 120 years old!), the cool climate, and the region’s signature mineral-rich, slate soils.
Ernst Loosen, the current head of the estate, was born into a winemaking family in Bernkastel that has been producing wine for over 200 years. Although he originally planned to become an archaeologist, his ties to the family tradition proved stronger.
He honed his winemaking skills in Austria, California, and France, and eventually joined the family business in 1988. His innovative and quality-driven approach revolutionized the perception of German Riesling. In recognition of his achievements, he was named "Winemaker of the Year" in Germany in 2001, and in 2005, Decanter magazine honored him with the prestigious “Man of the Year” award.
Today, the estate spans 50 hectares, including some of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Prälat, and Erdener Treppchen. Dr. Loosen produces around 200,000 bottles annually—all exclusively from Riesling.
