According to legend, the creation of Disaronno dates back to the 16th century. The artist Bernardino Luini, a favorite student of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to create a fresco depicting the Madonna of the Miracles of Saronno. Bernardino chose a local innkeeper’s wife as the model for the beautiful female figure, and after completing the painting, she thanked the artist with a flask of her homemade drink. Luini found an amber-colored, fragrant, and refined liqueur in the flask, which attained its unique harmony through secret ingredients.
Amaretto is a sweet, almond-based liqueur originally from the Italian city of Saronno. The name means "bitter," referring to the bitter almonds used in its creation. Other types of almonds and apricot pits are also used.
Disaronno produces an amaretto-flavored liqueur under its brand name, based on the original recipe, whose secret has been preserved since 1525. The oil from apricot pits is mixed with alcohol, caramelized sugar, and extracts from 17 different selected plants and fruits. It is bottled in a characteristic Murano glass decanter.
It can be enjoyed neat, on ice, in cocktails, as an Amaretto Sour, with cola, ginger ale, fruit juices, or even in hot chocolate or coffee.
